Cassius Murray Obituary

Mr. Cassius Isiah Murray, 39, husband of Marvel Kelley Murray, gained his heavenly wings Sunday, June 14, 2020.  After a heroic battle with heart disease, he peacefully entered into eternal rest surrounded by family at his childhood home in Calhoun Falls, SC. Mr. Murray was the only child born to Rev. Carolyn T. Murray and the late Curry M. Murray on May 8, 1981.  He was a faithful member of Springfield Baptist Church in Calhoun Falls, SC.  At an early age he committed his life to Christ and began his service to the Lord as a member of the Youth Choir and Usher Ministry.  He also served as a Junior Deacon.

Mr. Murray loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandson. He was a great football enthusiast. His favorite teams were the Pittsburg Steelers and South Carolina Gamecocks.  His love of the Gamecocks was reflected in being a season ticket holder for many years.  He carried on the family tradition that was created by his dad and hero, by attending football games at William-Brice Stadium. It was there that many family memories were created.

A graduate of Calhoun Fall High School Class of 1999, Mr. Murray went on to obtain his degree in Funeral Services and Embalming from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Services in Decatur, GA in 2001. While attending school, he was employed by Murray Brothers Funeral Home in Atlanta, GA.  Upon returning to South Carolina, he began his apprenticeship at Walker Funeral Home in McCormick, SC with completion under the tutelage of Robinson & Sons Mortuary in Greenwood, SC. Mr. Murray’s calling to serve families during their time of bereavement continued by working with Bostick-Thompson Funeral Home, Columbia SC, Unity Mortuary of Anderson, SC, JW Woodward Funeral Home of Spartanburg, SC, Webb-Settles Funeral Home of Greenville, SC, and as the Manager at Upstate Family Funeral Services in Greenville and Greer, SC. He was also formerly employed as a Sergeant for Greenwood County Detention Center, as well as, Deputy Coroner of McCormick County, SC.

In June 2018, Mr. Murray accomplished his long-time dream of opening his own funeral home.  Through determination and hard work, Serenity-Murray Mortuary was birthed in Spartanburg, SC. It was there that Mr. Murray personally assisted families until God called him home.

In addition to his father, Mr. Murray was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, William and Sylvia Turman; paternal grandparents, Harvey Lee Sr. and Ruth Murray, and Mary Frances Murray; and four uncles, Harvey Lee Murray, Jr., Gregory Crosby, Tony Childs, Roy Turman and Rev. Keith New.

Mr. Murray leaves to cherish loving and fond memories to his wife of Spartanburg, SC and mother of Calhoun Falls, SC; one daughter: Taliyah Hudson of Sheppard AFB, TX; two sons:  Zaden A. Morton of Greenwood, SC and Kentavius Hudson of Las Vegas, NV; one grandson: Jace Hudson of the home; four aunts: Josephine (Robert) Williams of Simpsonville, SC, Rev. Linda (Billy) Tucker of McCormick, SC, Patricia (Alfred) Clark of Calhoun Falls, SC and Theresa Childs of Greenwood, SC; five uncles: William J. Turman of Charlotte, NC, Charles T. (Lovella) Turman of Calhoun Falls, SC, Robert A. (Danielle) Turman of Ware Shoals, SC, Ricky (Stephanie) Crosby of Aldie, VA and Jerome Perrin of McCormick, SC; and a host of loving cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Murray left a legacy in the funeral service community and in the hearts of all who knew him.  He will be forever missed.
