Rev. Shirley Scurry Obituary

Reverend Shirley F. Scurry, a native of Spartanburg, SC, entered into eternal rest at the age of 82, in Columbia, SC. She was the daughter of the late Clifton Foster and Lillie Higgins Foster. She was a graduate of Carver High Class of 55, Spartanburg, SC.  She matriculated her education from Allen University and Columbia University, New York. And, was the founder and Minister of Mission Gold Chapel of God in Columbia, SC.

Rev. Scurry devoted herself to the well-being of others and her family.  She was an educator by profession who spent over 24 years in the former North School District 6, which is now in Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5, in Orangeburg, SC. She began her teaching career in 1961. She spent seven years teaching music and civics at Barr Street High School and Bar Street Junior High School in Lancaster, SC before landing at North High School in 1979. There she taught 7th grade English, psychology, sociology and remedial reading along with music appreciation at the high school. In 1986 she transferred to North Elementary School, where physical education, music, health, and first grade art were among the subjects which she taught. In 2002, she transferred back to North High until her retirement.  Rev. Scurry also had her own private music and dance studio in Columbia, SC.

Rev. Scurry, was the proud mother of two sons: Harrison Scurry of Upper Marlboro, MD and the late Rawn Scurry.

In addition to her parents and one son, Rev. Scurry was preceded in death by eight siblings: Clifton Foster, Annie L. Mannings, Jessie S. McJimpsey, Lillie F. Hodges, Josephine Foster, Leonard Foster, Addie Foster and Julia Foster Gist.

Rev. Scurry leaves to cherish loving and fond memories her son, Harrison; two brothers, Douglas E. (Betty Jean) Foster of Roebuck, SC and Carl E. Foster of Coppell, TX; two sisters, Loreece F. Haywood and Mary Linda Foster both of Spartanburg; a host of nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Rev. Scurry transitioned to the care and keeping of a loving and merciful God with whom she is now resting in everlasting peace.
